Frequently Asked Questions
Beginners Course
What is the beginners course?
Our beginners course has 3, weekly sessions designed to teach you the basics of shooting and range safety. It starts on the Sunday following active freshers weekend and runs for a further 2 weeks. If you've never completed a beginners course before, you will need to pass one at our club or another club and be deemed competent with all safety rules before being allowed to join the club.
Do I need any memberships to attend the beginners course?
No. You do not need to purchase either the Team Surrey or club membership in order to attend the beginners course. All you need is to be a current student at the university and purchase the product from our section on the student's union website when it is available for that year.
How do I sign up to the beginners course?
Booking for our beginners course that runs at the start of every academic year will open shortly after our active freshers session at the end of welcome week in September. Sign up to our mailing list at freshers fair or in our active freshers session to be notified as soon as this goes live. Info will also be posted on our Instagram and Facebook page. We do not accept advance bookings and the course is filled up on a first come first serve basis.
Joining the club
I couldn't attend the Active Freshers event, can I still join the club?
If you have minimal or no prior experience of archery you are able to sign up to our beginners course that runs at the start of each academic year, providing there are still spaces. If you have completed a beginners course before or have a lot of experience of the sport, please contact the club at ussu.archery@surrey.ac.uk to arrange a safety check so that you can join the club.
I'm not a student, can I still join?
Unfortunately our club is only open to current students at the University of Surrey. We recommend checking out other local clubs, such as Guildford Archery Club, if you are interested in trying or continuing the sport.
I'm a current/ past member of another ArcheryGB club, how do I join?
Please contact the committee at ussu.archery@surrey.ac.uk to arrange a safety check. Upon successful completion of the safety check, we will ask for your AGB number (even if it is expired) to add you to our club. You can choose to be affiliated to AGB through us or your other club. Our club membership price does not change if you choose not to affiliate to AGB with us.
I don't have an ArcheryGB membership, but I have a different governing body affiliation. How do I join?
Please contact the committee at ussu.archery@surrey.ac.uk so we can assess your situation. In most cases we will ask you to complete a safety check, then if you are competent and join the club we will affiliate you to AGB.
Equipment
Does the club have equipment I can use?
Yes! We have beginner bows that any member of the club is able to use in our sessions.
Can I bring my own equipment?
Yes! A member of the committee or a coach will need to check your equipment to make sure it is safe to shoot in our sessions and then you will be able to use your equipment, given you have passed our safety check or beginners course.
